Le espressioni idiomatiche gestuo-cinesiche in italiano
Abstract
This paper proposes an analysis of Italian gestural-kinetic idioms, i.e. idioms that refer to gestures and other kinesic behaviors such as body parts movements (girarsi i pollici “to twiddle one’s thumbs”), facial expressions (storcere il naso “to turn up one’s nose”), and body postures (mettersi in ginocchio “to go down on one’s knees”). A corpus of 660 idioms was selected, and idioms were classified both on the basis of the kind of behavior they refer to, and on the basis of their semantic characteristics. It emerges that gestural- kinetic idioms have a double function of lexicalizing non-verbal communicative behaviors, and using kinesic images to express abstract concepts.
