Abstract

According to the Cognitive Theory of Metaphor, we conceive time in terms of space, a principle witnessed by the recurrence of this metaphor in many languages of the world, including Portuguese. Several cognitive spaceto- time mappings are displayed by natural languages, and, at least, five of them are witnessed in Portuguese by the grammatical metaphors of the periphrases, of the idioms and the figurative lexical units. The personal discursive competence of the writers, taking advantage of these possibilities, can create a multiplying effect by mixing them, as we can see in the work of the Brazilian poet, romancist, composer, singer and dramaturge Chico Buarque de Holanda.
